9AM – Keynote – Kevin Smith, FEMA/Director of DHS Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiative

Kevin Smith’s new federal role is to promote and develop partnerships among the public, faith- and community-based organizations, emergency managers, and first responders to strengthen the resilience of our nation. Widely lauded for more than a decade of hurricane and earthquake response leadership, Smith worked for 20 years in faith- and community-based organizations, most recently as the Florida State Director for Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army. 9:30AM-12:30PM – Large-Scale Disaster Response Exercise

In this exercise — developed by Suzanne Blake of the MIT Office of Emergency Management and Business Continuity, in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County OEM and VOAD — cross-sector groups will collaborate to respond to a major earthquake in Santa Barbara County. Video newscast simulations will enliven and enhance the exercise.
